[post_page_title]Owning the tails of whales[/post_page_title]
There is an unusual rule that would see Kate become the rightful owner of whale tails. The ruling monarch is given the right to own all of the whales, dolphins, and sturgeons that swim into the British Isles. When William is King, that means he owns the vast majority of these animals, but as his wife, Kate would actually own their tails.
It’s a pretty bizarre arrangement, and it was seemingly done for the sake of dressmaking. King Edward II passed the law in the 14th century which allowed his wife the bones of the tails of these animals, presumably to help make corsets. Corsets are no longer popular, so it’s unlikely that Kate will be hunting whales once she’s Queen.
