The Dead Sea Scrolls are an extraordinary find, shedding light on Jewish life under Roman rule. The scrolls are believed to date back from 300 BCE to 100 CE, and about 30% of them contain texts about the life of a Jewish sect from that time period. Scholars still debate on which sect exactly is behind the manuscripts. Some connect the scrolls to the Essenes of to James, brother of Jesus, while others believe that they should be looked at in the context of their contemporaries too.
