The Library of Ashurbanipal was one of the great libraries of antiquity, located in the Assyrian Empire’s capital of Nineveh in modern-day North Iraq. It held thousands of clay tablets dating back to the 7th century BCE. Unfortunately, mishandling of the finds made many texts irrecoverable. According to a few traditions, Alexander the Great was inspired to build his own great library after visiting there. Though he died after his lengthy conquest, Ptolemy constructed it in Alexandria.
