Monolithic structures with enormous faces watched over the tribal lands of the Rapa Nui in Easter Island. Between 1250 and 1500, hundreds of these statues were chiseled at a quarry and transported throughout the island. Standing tall at 70 ft. and weighing up to 270 tonnes, it is remarkable they could have been transported throughout the island without any machinery. Wars between the tribes and with European explorers left the statues in a state of disrepair until restorations were made in the 1990s, with the giant heads looking over the island once more.
