During the Early Middle Ages, from the 8th to the 12th centuries, every major city in Europe was under the threat of a Viking raid. Vikings mean pirates in Old English, and they stayed true to their namesake. With advanced navigational skills and the use of their versatile, light longships, they reached as far as the Mediterranean, the Baltics, Eastern Europe and even Persia. These formidable sea raiders even made it to Newfoundland, Canada 500 years before Columbus reached the New World.
