[post_page_title]The hunted become the hunters[/post_page_title]

The 1492 Alhambra Decree led to the expulsion of Jews from Spain and Portugal. Finding refuge in the colony of Jamaica and in the Ottoman Empire, Jewish sailors became pirates against Spanish and Portuguese vessels, both in the Mediterranean Sea and in the New World. Jewish privateers aided in capturing parts of Portuguese Brazil for the Dutch, and in conquering Spanish Jamaica for the British in 1655. Jamaica still has a Jewish pirate cemetery, in which the tombstones have Hebrew epitaphs alongside the skull and crossbones.
