A short-lived pirate republic actually existed in the city of Nassau, Bahamas from 1713 to 1718. After a decade without a governor, the pirate population swelled on the lawless island, and soon enough they outnumbered the puritan inhabitants ten to one. The pirate republic was officially established with its own council, but soon after, it was conquered by the English navy. Despite no longer being in charge, thanks to the trade and prosperity the pirates brought to the port city, it became the capital of the Bahamas.
