If pirates at The Age of Exploration are romanticized as adventurous swashbucklers, current piracy doesn’t get such treatment. Instead of engaging merchant ships of the same size with intimidation and cunning, modern pirates use motor boats, automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenades to storm unsuspecting ships. With greater speed and firepower, they take the stolen goods back to a larger vessel. This successful M.O. is estimated to cause 16 billion dollars in damages every year. Because they mostly operate in international waters, they are harder to capture and prosecute.
