Before his illustrious political career made him a world leader, Julius Caesar was kidnapped by Cilician pirates on his way to study oratory in Rhodes. The pirates who captured him demanded a ransom, but Ceasar urged them to ask for more, as appropriate for a man of his station. The pirates then received the larger sum, but perhaps they should have just let him go, as Caesar promised to crucify them for kidnapping him – which he did: after being released, he hired an army to track them down and thus fulfilled his promise.
