Zaporizhian Sich was a 16th century autonomy located in modern day Ukraine. The secretive settlement was a hiding place for peasants running away from their feudal lords and for other unfortunate souls. With the protection of the Dnieper River and a thirst for riches, the pirates of this settlement targeted rich villages and cities alongside the Black Sea, primarily of the Ottoman Empire. They were so successful in their actions that the Ottoman Sultan had to flee his palace in Istanbul for a while.
