Surprisingly enough, piracy was one of the most egalitarian businesses during The Age of Exploration. Pirate crews had a system to distribute loot fairly as well as a representative, a quartermaster, that could veto the captain’s orders. Though, the value of the loot itself varied according to the exchange rate at the specific port. Because the earnings of pirates exceeded those of naval sailors, and fearing dissention, countries turned their excess sailors into pirates under their flag called privateers.
