A bottle of rum and a license to steal – little-known facts about pirates

[post_page_title]Piracy still occurs in Europe[/post_page_title]

Though piracy was drastically reduced from its Golden Age 350 years ago, it is still prevalent in several parts of the world. Most contemporary pirate attacks occur off the coasts of Somalia and Yemen or in the straits of Southeast Asia. Surprisingly, there are still pirates who sail along the main river of Europe, the Danube, ambushing large vessels at narrow chokepoints. They operate in the Romanian and Serbian parts of the Danube river, meaning, there are active pirates within the European Union. Patrols, such as the Serbian one in this photo, work against these maritime criminals.
