A bottle of rum and a license to steal – little-known facts about pirates

[post_page_title]Libertalia, pirate city[/post_page_title]

According to some sources, Libertalia was a pirate haven in northern Madagascar that lasted for a quarter century. Written in a manifesto by Pirate Captain James Misson, Libertalia was to be a “barrier against the rich and the powerful.” Akin to the American Revolution of the time, the city featured progressive ideas such as the abolishing of slavery, monarchies and capital. Many, however, believe this utopian ideal never fully materialized. Even though they didn’t live up to the utopian standard, pirate ports were founded over the years, including some in Madagascar, which may have inspired Misson.
