A running theme of Harry’s entire childhood is that he was mistreated by his aunt, uncle, and cousin Dudley. But in their defense, there is a theory that holds a lot of water as to why they were absolutely horrible to him. We find out in the Deathly Hallows that Harry has a horcrux concealed within him, and they contain potent levels of dark magic. Perhaps the reason the Dursleys were obnoxious had nothing to do with Harry, but the piece of Voldemort’s soul that lived inside him.
