1988’s Married to the Mob was a star-making movie for Michelle Pfeiffer, who turned in what critics called her best performance to date. It was also a very strange movie. Simultaneously a comedy that bordered on – and often crossed the line into – farce and a serious relationship drama, it may’ve just been a bit too much for audiences.
Critics, meanwhile, loved it, and praised both the movie and director Jonathan Demme’s work. In the end, it tried to be two very different things, and audiences and critics were wildly at odds as to how well it pulled it off.
