In a galaxy far, far away, the world of Star Wars abounds with a multitude of storylines, places, and characters over the course of eight films. Some characters are beloved by fans worldwide while others are somewhat less popular. We all have our favorite characters and films, and the debate over which are the best seems like it will never end.
We all know about Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Princess Leia, and Chewbacca, but there are so many other characters that we tend to forget about. They may have as much screen time as the stars of the films, but they are still wonderful characters with great stories and add so much to the plot. Here are a handful of the most underrated characters to people the world of Star Wars so far.
Given that it was Shmi Skywalker who spawned the entire Star Wars story, her character is grossly underrated. The Midi-chlorian creatures chose her to birth Anakin Skywalker, who, as we know, went on to become Darth Vader, and let him leave Tatooine at the age of nine to train with the Jedis, setting the whole story in motion.
The medical droid helped Luke Skywalker win many lightsaber fights in The Empire Strikes Back after he lost his hand in a duel with Darth Vader. It built him a replacement hand that allowed him to get his revenge.
Raymus Antilles was captaining the Tantive IV ship on which Princess Leia was hiding. He refused to hand over the Death Star plans to Darth Vader and ended up being strangled to death as a result. He essentially sacrificed his life for the greater good and most definitely deserves more exposure.
Qui-Gon Jinn is the Jedi Master who trained Anakin in the ways of the Jedi. He also defied the Jedi council when he saw fit, becoming one of the series’ many rebels.
Count Dooku was played by Christopher Lee and is one of the franchise’s best but underrated villains. His lightsaber fight with Yoda, barely a quarter of his size, made for a gripping yet comic sequence. He was a skilled fighter and leader brought to a stop by Anakin Skywalker, who later joined the dark side himself.
Close friend of Luke Skywalker, Biggs appears briefly at the end of A New Hope. He is the inspiration for Luke’s wanting to get away from Tatooine and join the Imperial Academy. Darklighter’s death comes at the hands of Darth Vader as he serves as a human shield for Luke during the trench run.
In the Return of the Jedi. Lando plays a major role in liberating Han from Jabba the Hut. He also leads the assault on the second Death Star while piloting the Millennium Falcon. Lando’s contributions are largely glossed over, but he remains one of the biggest heroes of the Star Wars galaxy.
These are some of the great yet underrated characters in the Star Wars universe. Next time you watch the movies, see how many you agree with.
