The freakish characters seen here are actually a copy of the outfits worn by doctors during the plague epidemics in Europe. Germs were not fully understood by scientists at the time and it was though that these costumes would protect doctors against miasma or “bad air.”
As the plague was a pretty devastating outbreak in human history that is estimated to have killed around 60% of Europe’s population, we’re not quite sure if these subway riders were doing this as a strange joke or to make some sort of statement.
