Thanos’ Infinity Stones explained

Let’s be honest; we’re darn tootin’ obsessed with Marvel. Yep, we love the comics, we love the movies, and we love the characters more than our own family (okay, maybe they’re on par). Yet, if you’ve been keeping up with the Marvel universe recently, you’ll know that our favorite galaxies are under threat from one of the most notorious baddies of all time, Thanos (*shivers*). While he may look like he’s drunk one too many Sizzurps, Thanos is actually one of the deadliest baddies to face the likes of the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy in a while, but why is he so intent on acquiring these Infinity Stones?

What are the Infinity Stones?

Well, if you’re a hardcore lover of Marvel, you might know these stones by a few other names. You might know them as the Infinity Gems or even the Soul Gems. These stones are incredibly power entities that possess powers beyond measure – which means they are a pretty big deal. While they are extremely powerful on their own, if someone were to acquire all of the stones and use them at once, they would have enough power to overpower some of the strongest superheroes on the planet, and take the galaxy for their own. See where we’re going right now?

What powers do they possess?

All in all, there are six Infinity Stones, and each one is just as cool as the other. There is the Power Gem, which has the ability to give the user increased strength and durability. There is the Time Gem, which allows the user to travel in time, as well as slow down or speed up time (including their own aging process). There is the Space Gem, which allows the users to transport themselves anywhere else in the universe. There is the Soul Gem, which allows the user to steal another’s soul or manipulate it. There is the Reality Gem, which allows the user to alter their own and others’ reality, and there is the Mind Gem, which allows the user to read minds and partake in telekinesis. We told you they were cool. If used together, these stones makes the user virtually invincible.

What does Thanos want with them?

Of course, this is a bit of a silly question – because who WOULDN’T to possess the Infinity Stones? While most of us would do anything to travel from planet to planet or reverse our aging, it’s fair to say that we would also use these stones for good, rather than bad. However, the same can’t be said for Thanos. After excelling on his home planet and becoming one of the most knowledgeable people in the universe, Thanos was supposedly destined for great things.

Because of this, he was actually asked to protect the Reality Gem from those who wanted to use it for evil. Yet, before too long, Thanos had turned to the dark side and kissed death (and he liked it). After losing his place as a protector due to his murderous ways, Thanos embarked on a mission to gain all of the power from these stones to become the most powerful being in the universe. We’ve gotta give the guy credit, as he has come pretty close to having them all a few times, but has always been thwarted by the likes of the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy. But this hasn’t stopped him from trying…

Because Marvel integrates numerous different stories into one huge universe, it’s often hard to understand what’s really going on – but hopefully, this guide to Thanos’ Infinity Stones will help you out. If you’re in doubt, just know that it’s definitely not a good idea for these stones to be in his possession. Otherwise, there’s a 100% chance the world will come to an end. Not good.
