Star Wars: The Last Jedi ending – what happens and what it means

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock for the past few decades, you’ve probably heard of a little thing called Star Wars. You know, the huge sci-fi franchise that has millions of fans across the globe? That’s the one. With more than 14 movies and spin-offs to its name so far, LucasFilm has brought us an incredible moviecation that has kept us all entertained for years. After all, you can’t not be entertained by guys and gals dressed in robes, lightsabers, and masks that make you sound as if you have asthma. Yet, after The Last Jedi came onto the silver screen in 2017, we’ve all been wondering the same thing… what happened in THAT ending, and what does it all mean?

What happens?

So, to understand what all the fuss is about, we need to know a little more about what happened. The end of The Last Jedi features some of the main characters – and a heck load of drama. After Luke Skywalker and Kylo Ren find themselves in an epic battle, Luke uses his Jedi Master skills to project a hologram of his own body. As Kylo Ren starts to attack the hologram, Luke uses the distraction to help Rey and the rest of the Rebel Alliance get back onto the Millenium Falcon. However, it’s not as easy as that.

To get the Rebels free from the rocky wreckage they’re stuck under, Rey has to use The Force to do so. Earlier on in the movie, we learned that Rey was not a traditional Jedi and retrieved her powers from another source… so what does this mean? Well, the questions don’t end there. As the Rebels fly away in the Millenium Falcon, the scene changes. Suddenly, we’re transported to a barn in the middle of the countryside, where a young boy is using The Force to summon a broom into his hands. As he continues to sweep around him, the boy looks up to the sky and watches as a bright light flits through the stars – but fans were more concerned about the Rebel Alliance emblem that was on his ring.

What does it mean?

In the first movie of this trilogy, we learned that The Force had been awakened, but we had always assumed that it had come to its natural end within Luke Skywalker. After we discover that Luke will not be in the next movie, this kept us wondering how the story would be kept alive. Yet, now that Rey has The Force and potential other in the universe hold similar powers, we know that The Force will still be alive and kicking for years to come. However, once again – it’s just not as simple as that. Within The Last Jedi, Rey and Kylo Ren find themselves chopping and changing from both the Dark Side and the Light Side.

Through this, we have been able to come to the conclusion that those with The Force aren’t forced (if you’ll excuse the pun) into either good or evil. Instead, they can control both areas at will. In terms of the little boy in the barn, things are a little murkier. While we don’t know who this boy is or where he has come from, the fact that he is wearing the Rebellion ring is a huge turning point for the movie, because it shows just how far the Rebellion has gone. Because of this, the Rebels could be even stronger than we first imagined. Could Luke (or Rey) be the one to reunite all of the Rebels once and for all?

The Last Jedi left Star Wars fans feeling both confused and excited. Although we hate the fact that we have to wait a whole year to see what the next installment has to offer, we’re perfectly happy speculating what the heck is going on to start with. So, what the heck is going on?! Well, we might have to watch the ending another 50 times just to make sure.
