‘Hold me closer, Tony Danza’ – the funniest misheard lyrics

Do you feel confident that you know all the words to your favorite songs? When we really love something, we can’t help but sing along, but sometimes our excitement can get the best of us. It’s not until we end up singing in front of other people that we realize we’ve been saying the wrong lyrics the whole time. Don’t worry; you’re not alone. Most of us do it, and we’ve made some pretty major mistakes over the years. These are some of the funniest.

Dancing Queen (ABBA)

Dancing Queen is one of the most iconic songs of ABBA’s career (which is hard to say when so much of their back catalog were mega hits). However, people apparently misunderstood the message the group was trying to get across back in the ‘70s. The original line goes “See that girl, watch that scene, digging the dancing queen,” but that was too safe for some listeners. They believed that ABBA was singing, “See that girl, watch her scream, kicking the dancing queen.” Suddenly the song got a whole lot darker.

We Will Rock You (Queen)

Is there anyone in the world that doesn’t know We Will Rock You by Queen? Freddy Mercury was a true superstar, and he gifted us with some of the greatest songs we’ve ever heard, this being one of them. It appears that listeners in the ‘70s were getting very concerned about all these songs being released that seemed to promote abuse, though. Rather than hearing the line “Kicking your can all over the place,” they thought Mercury was singing, “Kicking your cat all over the place.” The world was left wondering what poor Mr. Whiskers ever did to upset Queen.

Livin’ on a Prayer (Bon Jovi)

Livin’ on a Prayer is one of those truly epic songs. When it comes on, it’s hard to resist the urge to rock out, and it gets played quite a lot. However, the whole time that people were getting their groove on to this tune, they were messing up one of its pivotal lines. Bon Jovi sings that, “It doesn’t make a difference if we make it or not,” but that’s not what some people were hearing. They were willing to believe that the band was actually singing, “It doesn’t make a difference if we’re naked or not.” We’d argue that it probably does make a difference, especially if you’re out in public.

Blank Space (Taylor Swift)

Okay, we’ll confess that we’re guilty of this one. When Blank Space came out, we could instantly tell that it was a banger. Coming off the back of smash hit Shake It Off, it was clear by this point that the new era of Swift was going to be a great one. However, there was one thing that had us scratching our heads. Why was Taylor singing about Starbucks lovers? Well, it turns out she wasn’t. What sounded like “Got along with Starbucks lovers,” was actually her saying “Got a long list of ex-lovers.” It seems so obvious now, but for those first few weeks, we were so confused.

Tiny Dancer (Elton Dancer)

You’d think given the title, people wouldn’t get this one wrong. However, it turns out that when we get carried away with a song, all common sense goes out of the window. Rather than singing the line, “Hold me closer, tiny dancer,” people though Elton was saying, “Hold me closer, Tony Danza.” We’re sure the actor is flattered so many people want to hold him close. However, we wonder what Elton makes of all these listeners getting the words to his song wrong.

Every time a new song is released, there’s a good chance that someone will mishear one of the lyrics. If that person is you and it happens repeatedly, you might want to consider getting your hearing checked. We’re not saying you’re going deaf, but we can only blame the singer’s enunciation so many times.
