Everything we know about the fourth Matrix movie currently in the works

It’s been 20 years since the first Matrix was released and 16 years since we last saw Neo and Trinity taking on the machines with The Matrix Revolutions in 2003. We all assumed that this was the final installment of the series and were left with a very satisfying ending to the trilogy. Yes, we still had questions, but the ending summed it all up perfectly. We were hit with a bombshell of note when the original trilogy director, Lana Wachowski, came out with the news of a fourth installment in August 2019. Since then, there has been much speculation about the film. While it’s all being kept very quiet for now, here is everything we know about the fourth Matrix movie so far.

The cast

Keanu Reeves is all set to relive his character as Neo for the fourth installment. With John Wick 3 being released earlier this year, we just can’t seem to get enough of Hollywood’s shy guy. We are also super pleased that Carrie-Ann Moss will be back to play the lovely Trinity… which will be very interesting to see considering her death at the end of the third film. The latest introduction to the cast is Yahya Abdul-Mateen II whom we recognize from his role as Black Manta in 2018’s Aquaman. There’s no word yet on who his character will be in the film, but there is much speculation that Yahya could take on the role of a younger Morpheus. There’s been no say yet on whether or not Lawrence Fishburn will return to take his place for the role.

The plot so far

Lana Wachowski is set to direct and write the film, with co-writers Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell. There has essentially been nothing released thus far as to what the plotline will be. There are rumors, however, that with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II being brought on as a possible younger version of Morpheus, that there could be a time travel twist to the film.

What the fans are hoping for

The original Matrix came out during the perfect time. Right on the cusp of the turn of the century, just when our advancements in technology were really moving at an almost frightening rate. The film left us speechless with so many “what ifs” and so many “could that be possible?” conversations being left in the wake of that cinematic masterpiece. But we didn’t get the same feeling from the sequels, which left some fans very disappointed. It’s a very tough legacy to live up to. With Reeves stating that the script is “Very ambitious, as it should be” and Moss stating that “It’s amazing,” hopefully the fans won’t be left wanting.

We are hoping for answers to the big questions we have from the third film. Like how could Neo use his powers in the real world? What happened to Morpheus after his completed mission? Was there really peace between the humans and machines and how long did it last? We want to see some awesome fighting scenes and with a villain other than Agent Smith for a change.

No-one knows for sure yet what to expect with this film. Currently busy in the pre-production and casting phase, the film is due to begin filming in February 2020. There is no release date yet, but we assume that 2022 will be it.
