Dans le Noir? – Paris, Barcelona, London, St. Petersburg, Nairobi
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to eat in a restaurant in complete darkness? At Dans le Noir? you can. These restaurants are located around the world in various cities with the idea to raise awareness of blindness, as well as heightening certain senses – especially taste. Their ‘dark room’ restaurants seat 60 people, and you’re served a surprise menu from one of four different themes: white is normal, blue is a fish and shellfish-based menu, green is completely vegetarian, and red is a selection of dishes containing meat. Once you’ve chosen your menu, you have no idea what you’ll be eating, or what it looks like.
Modern Toilet Restaurant – Taipei
Yep, you heard right. And this restaurant idea hasn’t flushed away. In fact, it’s been such a huge success the owner has started a chain! The idea of this restaurant is to take customers back to basics, and back to their toilets. Customers sit on closed toilet, with a bath as their table, and urinal lamps adorning the walls – and it just gets weirder. Punters are served pink noodles (served in a mini toilet of course) and a bidet full of swirled chocolate ice cream.
Rock Restaurant – Zanzibar
This takes dinner with a sea-view to a whole new level. Sitting on a giant rock off the coast of Michanwi Pingwe is the Rock Restaurant (creative name choice). At low tide, customers can walk up to the restaurant on foot, but at high tide, you’ll need to take a boat. And it is so worth it. As it’s right in the sea, the restaurant serves up some of the freshest seafood in Zanzibar – because it is right below your table.
Fangweng Restaurant – China
If you love living life on the edge, the Fangweng Restaurant is definitely for you. Located quite literally on the edge of a cliff hundreds of feet above a gorge and fast-flowing rivers, this restaurant isn’t for the fainthearted. Customers enter the restaurant in an underwhelming gray building before making their way along the edge of the cliff and taking their table. And if you want a bit of adventure before your main course, there’s even the option to bungee jump here, too! Best to do it before your meal, though…
Pomze – Paris
You know what they say, ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away.’ Well, with 120 varieties of apple in this restaurant, you won’t need to see the doctor for a while. As you can probably guess from the name, the Pomze restaurant is dedicated to one singular fruit. The chefs use apple in every single dish, and use it as the main ingredient and specialty for each course. They even make their own cider in the cellar underneath the restaurant.
