It was famed for its exports of pearls which lasted until the 1930s when Dubai was hit by the Great Depression. The economic downfall, which affected countries all around the world, hurt the United Arab Emirates city badly. It was another few decades until Dubai’s economy got back on its feet, but this time it struck gold – black gold. Following years of exploration, the city finally discovered oil reserves underneath Dubai’s territorial waters which resulted in economic growth. By 1990, 24% of their GDP came from these oil reserves, and the black gold paid for all the development that has now made Dubai one of the most prominent cities in the world. Of course, where there is money, there is the chance to show off. The people of Dubai know how to make their wealth know, and it’s led to some very strange things that you’d never see anywhere else.

As of 2017, Dubai is the 20th most expensive city in the world, sitting behind big names like Tokyo, Geneva and New York City. One look at Dubai should tell you that that’s nothing to be surprised about. The city, which has now had more than 50 years of growth since first striking oil, looks every bit the part of a wealthy metropolis. The landscape is filled with towers stretching up to the sky and roads bustling with flash cars left right and center. There’s nowhere in the Middle East that’s more expensive to visit, but a city with so much money definitely has its perks.
