The first Star Wars movie came out in 1977 (later titled A New Hope), and swept away millions and millions of fans, who became the franchise’s dedicated and zealous fans. These fans are so passionate about Star Wars, they don’t shy away from camping out to get into premieres or dressing up as their favorite characters. The franchise became so popular, it even got its own day of the year – May 4th (As in, “May the fourth be with you – a play on the Star Wars saying, “May the force be with you”).
The movies center around farmboy Luke Skywalker, who comes into the possession of a droid with a distress call from Princess Leia, who’s aboard a rebel ship intercepted by the Empire, led by the evil imperial agent Darth Vader. Along with Jedi knight, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Han Solo, and his Wookiee co-pilot Chewbaccahe, Luke goes on a mission to find a weakness within the Empire’s Death Star in order to destroy it – and also discovered his own Jedi force.
After the original movies came out, and were labeled episodes four, five, and six, the three prequels (episodes one through three) followed from 1999 and into the early 2000s, and received a lukewarm reception from the Star Wars fans. Still, the franchise had a huge impact on pop culture and the world as we know it today.
As the franchise kept growing and gaining fans of whole new generations, production company Lucasfilm decided on creating more Star Wars movies. Then came out The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, two sequels to the original films, which featured many of the original cast – including Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Harrison Ford (Han Solo), and the late Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia).
Standalone movies were made as well, including Rogue One and The Clone Wars. Solo: A Star Wars Story – set to come out on May 25th is another standalone movie in the franchise, about smuggler Han Solo’s earlier life, before the original Star Wars movies.
With such a huge production, and such passionate and opinionated fans, it’s only inevitable that Star Wars movies would come with a whole lot of on-set drama. Solo has had a whole array of issues making headlines, from Lucasfilm firing the directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, to Alden Ehrenreich taking over the young Han Solo role, and even a poster controversy. The star-studded production faced so many problems – it’s making fans question whether or not the force will be strong with this film.
