Despite pirates often being described as burying their treasure, in reality this hardly ever happened, with most ship raids only resulting in their taking everyday items out of necessity – if not the ship itself, to be traded later. Since raiding small ships for supplies was commonplace, pirates didn’t want to have a “take-no-prisoners” reputation that would lead to fights during every boarding. As such, they kept usually kept the target crew alive.
